"Drought in Lake Orumieh increased the level of salt concentration and salt density in this body of water," said founder of Iran`s Artemia and Aquatic Animals Research Institute Naser Aq. Brine shrimps, scientifically known as Artemia, cannot live and breed with more than 150 grams of salt per liter of water. This is while the level of salt in Lake Orumieh has reached 360 grams per liter. "The single and most effective way to save Artemia is to increase the water level in the Lake and control the density of salt," press tv quoted Aq as saying. Lake Orumieh is home to some 212 species of birds, 41 reptiles, 7 amphibians, and 27 species of mammals, including the Iranian yellow deer. Iran held an international workshop this December to discuss the state of Artemia in Lake Orumieh.
