TEHRAN (FNA)- An Iranian research institute announced that human activities and drought in Lake Orumieh, the world`s second largest salt water lake, have endangered the small brine shrimps of the lake, which serve as food for migratory birds."Drought in Lake Orumieh increased the level of salt concentration and salt density in this body of water," said founder of Iran`s Artemia and Aquatic Animals Research Institute Naser Aq.
Brine shrimps, scientifically known as Artemia, cannot live and breed with more than 150 grams of salt per liter of water. This is while the level of salt in Lake Orumieh has reached 360 grams per liter.
